«, —— (To the Editor.) Sib—l have been young and now am old nud I have seen many things that would have greatly astonished many who have lived in days gone bye. I have ceased to wonder at the changes and inventions of the presont century and have said that nothing could astonish me now. In this I was mistaken, for Mr" H.N.B. 1 * has done so quito lately, I followed him and R. N. Smith all through their controversy and I must say that I think Mr Smith has the advantage, The assertion by •'H.N.B." that imports arean income is so contrary to the reality that ilia positively absurd. I cannot help it, the ' word will corae.aud his argumentin proof that loans by Government are income is really so thin that it will not endure a moment's discussion. Wo wonder that , Sir Julius Vogel said in the House that the quarterly accounts published in the ' Gazette would never balance; that they would not add up nor subtract nor divide nor balance Would "H.N.8." borrow £1000 and call it income and spend it freely as income, and would he add it to his "schedule and send it to the Commissioner of the Infomo Tax to be assessed.
