MIDLAND RAILWAY.
Wellington, January 14. Tho Post to-night states that His : Excellency the Governor deraurrod to being served parson ally with the Midland Railway Company's notice of arbitration. He contended that «s Hes Majesty's representative he could not be served, Ho, howevor, exercised the power given under tho contract to nominate a ' substitute to receive the service, and |he nominated tho Hon. R. J. Seddon, : Minisipr of Public Works, as hi 3 stfbsti* i tuts. Notieo of •Arbitration has therefore been personally served on Mr i Seddon, together with further notice i warning Government not to alienate any i o? the land included in map fll attached to tho contract, and over which the com- / p'any claims lien The claim for dama es i to bo preferred by the company against ! the colony on the points on which the I arbitration ia demanded will, it is said, i amount to about £1)600,000.
