MINING.

Hazelhank.—A crushing of 30 loads of general dirt and a small parcel of picked stone was cornplptgd for this company at tho Moanataiari battery yesterday 7, for tho very satisfactory return of 1290zs lOdwts of melted gold. The manager (Mr Jamos Coutts) reports as follows.—" Driving is being continued east and west of the crosscut ou the lead at the No. 2 intermediate level, in tho eastern drivo. Tho load is small, but uo doubt as it is driven upon it will open out again to its usual sizp. A littlo gold was seen in tho quartz broken out here yesterday, but nothing good enough to SGleot as picked stone; also, colours of gold havo been seen in tho western drivo. Stoping ou tho cross reef abovoNo. 1 intermediate level, is proceeding as usual. Gold has been frequently seon in tho quartz, and about 151b of picked stono obtained; otherwise thero is little' change in the appearance of the reef in tlioso stopes sinco ray last.

May Queen.—This company's usual monthly crushing was completed yesterday for tho excellent return of 218dz jfldiYtfi Qf melted gold, which was tho result of tho iredout £4 loads of goueral dirt and 75 pounds of iuCk fl d stono. Tho manager (Mr W. II Bnvch) reports as follows for tho week ending on tho 29th inst:—"Tho low level has linen extended a further disiauce of 23 feet for tho week. Tho gi?onnd is still very hard, but water is now coming from tho face, so that I hope wo arc near] through tho hard ground, Tho No. 21 level is now in a total distanco of 204 feet from tho main winzo. During the last 12 feet driven the lodo has been disturbed through the slidy nature of tho country mob with, and uogold has boon aoouiu tho drivo. Still wo wil

drivo a few fcot further to see if it improves. In tho s'op# there is nothing fresh to ropoi't; strong dabs of gold boing seen, but no picked stone secured. This week a start v. ill be m dt; to siuk the winzo from No. 2 r,o 3 lev. I.'' •■'^Cambhia.—The manager Mr W. Baker) reports as follows.—'"Ti.o drive , nn No. 2 Ifiidor is being • \ ••mletl as ' usual The lead'-r cont nn- sto look £ well, whi'e several stiecs of pirked stone ha\'o been also s^'oc-ei from tins quartz { broken. The leader recently met- with in the footwall is also being carried alon« in this drive. There are at present from 2 to 3ft of sandstone between the two 1 a'lors, and as their strike is very nearly the same, theie will be several feet yet to drive before the junction is met with. In the winze No. 1 leader is getting more defined, and by its favorable appearance I would expect to meet with picked s f on" at any time, a little of which has been obtained from heie during the week, The crosscut at No. 4 level is now cleaned up to a few feet oft No. 7 leader; here two or three sets of timber are broken down, which has allowed a portion of the stowing to run. A. few days should sea us through this, Tho dan is so far very satisfactory, no sign of any leakage. The crushing v ,11 probab'y be finished to-day or tomornw." New Moanataiari.—The followin :in the mine manages (Mr G. G. Clark) icport.— I "Since npmfcinns were again resumed in the battery there ha< bren 134 tons of quartz and IS7 tons of surfac.* material treated for the separate yields of 121 oz3 and 19ozs of aiiiiik'flin 15' 1 feet level: Much about the me class of country is s'ill met wi'li in ihe Sft prospecting crosscut Konr'cen feel were driven last week, whi *h mak'"S the | total distance now driven from the No. 4 lead 149 feet. I have also two men employed here prospec'ing a section o 1 country between the hfingingwallbrnn h of No 9 reef and No. 9 p'one.-. Ti. ( .re should be some leads discovered he: e which ought to provo payable. The Golden Age footwall leads in the stopos above the Point Busseli Wei rominuetn produce a few pounds of nick- d stw almost daily—3o or 40 pounds being obtained during the week jus' past A little sold has also been seen in the Dawn of Hope load, but there has been nothing good enough got to class as picked stone. On Jones' lead the usual number of hands are being employed, and quartz of a payable grade continues to be forthcoming, This evening or to-morrow I expect to connect these workings with the Point Russell level. Only half the number of men are employed on tho s".rface workings as we have not been able to get the dirt, through the battery.
