A DESPERATE ENCOUNTER.

The have of Duumore Hotel, Macquarie street, Sydney, was the scone of a desporato encounter with burglars early on the morning of October 14. The landlord, Martin Muller, states that he was awakened about 4 o'clock by hearing someone moving about his room. In reply to a query as to who was there he was seized by the throat, and the muzzle of a revolver presented at his head by a masked man. Muller dashed the revolver aside, and seized tho burglar. A desperate struggle on the iloor followed, in the heat of which a second masked man put in an appearance. Muller at once tackled the second man, who repeatedly tried to strike him with the but end of a revolver. Whilst dodging about the burglar tripped and fell, and. Muller overpowered bim. Tho man whom the hotelkeeper at first overcame had by this time recovered, and came to his companion's assistance, lie dragged Muller away, and tho prostrate burglar took advantage of the breathing time to make good his escape by jumping from a balcony at the back of the house to tho ground, a distance of fifteen feet. The other burglar also had bad enough, and, making down the main entrance, scrambled through a window by which the robbers gained admittance. On searching the premises a revolver, mask and a pair of boots left behind by tho burglars were found by tho police. Previous to entering the main buildiug the robbers ransacked the rooms of the lodgers, but only secured a small sum of money.
