A STEAMER OVERDUE,
THE S.S. WAIRAjaPA. i FEARS FOR HER SAFETY. Auckland, October 30. Anxiety is felt for the s.s. Wairarapa, now overdue from Sydney. She loft Sydney on Wednesday last at 6 p.m., and was therefore due at this port early yesterday morning. The s.s. Rotomahana, which left 24 hours after the Wairarapa, arrived at daylight to-day, and i&jorfcs having seen no sign of the ifcarapa, nor has any word been received of the overdue steamer being on the coast this morning. It is considered that some serious accident must have happened to the machinery of the "Wairarapa" about 24 hours after leaving Sydney. The wind at that time was strong from the north, and with the strong southerly current would drift the steamer far out of sight before the Rotom.thana passed over the track some 24 hours later. It is considered probable we will first hear of her bciug sighted somewhere in the vicinity of Cape Howe. The styamer leaving here to-mor-row for Sydney is to keep a sharp look-out. _ The Rotomahana, with the exception of the first day, had a fine passage and light seas. r ( Later. There are no signs of the Wairarapa. Steamers leaving here for Sydney are instructed to keep a sharp , look out.
