' Auckland, January 9. - Yesterday Sir George Grey received a letter, from Kaikohe, Bay of Islands district, informing bim of the death of Hariata Hongi, a. woman of illustrious desccn'fc as the Maoris count lineage. She was a daughter of the great Hongi, and married the equally famous Hone Heke, , who led the first war against, the Europeans which led to the sacking of Korarareka and the fights at Okaihau, Ruapekapeka, and other places. 'Hongi was called "The Napoleon of . New Zealand " and was the leader of the merciiess raids from the Bay of Islands which devastated a great part of the North Island.
