Masterton, Thursday. A settler named Hoffmann while, clearing land near Masterton this morning borrowed a keg of powder to burst stumps. New Plymouth, Thursday. The licensing meetings for the districts in the Taranaki County cannot be held this year, ojving to the usual notices not having been advertised in time. The Governor will therefore be called upon to nominate the members 1 of the Licensing Committees. " .

The delegates from New Plymouth and Hawera who represent the Bush Fire Relief Committees have completed their labours, and have given orders to the sufferers for material, and in some cases money. The whole fund is now disbursed. It has also been arranged that the Hawera fund should be banked with the New Plymouth fund, and orders issued on the New Plymouth treasurer. Another handsome donation has been received, being £60 from Messrs Sargood, of Melbourne. Christohdroh, Thursday. This afternoon Cardinal Moran laid the foundation atone of the Magdalene Asylum at Mount Magdala, Lincoln Road, towards the cost of which the Maxwell bequest , of £2000 is to be applied. The Cardinal, accompanied by a large number of ecclesiastics and others, drove out in a number of carriages to the site of the asylum. On arrival, the party waß received by 80 school children drawn up in two lines. The stone having been laid, Cardinal Moran delivered an address, stating that they were met that day to lay the foundation stone of an asylum for the most forlorn of their fellow creatures,—a work which would commend itself to everyone. The virtue of charity was the crown of all other virtues, and the work'of their Divine Master had told them it was a pearl above price. A collection was made realising a large sum, including four contributions of 100 guineas each, and two of £25. The Cardinal and parly left for Wellington this evening by the Rotomahana.
