Tawhiao and his chiefs, accompanied by the Mayor and Major Mail , and tho City Councillors, visited Mangere settlement, where Tawhiao resided previous to tho war. On hi 3 return he was entertained by tho Mayor at his residence, Bemuern. Tawhiao made a speech and thanked tho Mayor for his kindness. He stated that ho would have a great gathering in March at Kopua, and he invited all the Europeans to it. Ho returned to Auckland in the ovoning, where a torchlight procession and display of fireworks by the Fire Brigade and the Naval Brigade was given in honour of tho native guests. A heavy north-westerly gale prevailed yesterday. At high tide tho boatshed was flooded. The breakwater has sustained no damage. The high tide has washed away some of the railway embankment near the works, but nothing of any conseqreice. Wellington, Saturday. A strong N.Y/. gale, accompanied with a heavy down-pour of rain, has been blowing all day. Should the weather moderate, the Premier will leave on his Northern tour to-morrow evening. A supplementary Gazette, issued this afternoon, proclaims the new licensing districts under the Licensing Act which passed last session. It also contains a list of the returning officers and clerks for these districts. The Union Company agree to convey the Volunteers of the New Zealand Rifle Association,to and from Nelson on the same terms as last year, viz., return tickets at single fares. The store of Cupt, Williams, coal merchant, was broken into, an entrance being effected through one of the front windows The office was ransacked, but no valuables were found. The police are investigating the matter, but as yet have no clue to tho burglars. Nelson, Saturday. A gale from the north east came on. last night, and is still blowing in unabated fury. At high tide to-day some damage was done by the sea tide being four feet above the level of spring tides at the stores of Messrs Levin and Franzen, at tho Port, which project over. The tide-way water broke through the flooring, and dashing up to tho ceiling caused much damage to the goods. At one time it was feared that the' stores would bo carried away. The Port Road, from the Gasworks downward, was overflowed and some heavy logs were floating about. It is difficult to ascertain the damages, but it is not thought they will be very heavy. If the wind continues it is feared the tide to-night will be backed even more, and then serious damage is probable. 'Nelson, Sunday. The gale has now moderated; in addition to the damage previously mentioned the sea and wind stove in a portion of the Marine Baths and the Naval Brigade boatshed. Much ballasting to the railway to port was washed away and some of the large coping stones of tho sea-wall were moved out of their place. Part of the roadway near the rocks has suffered. Franzen's schooner May, which was lying with .two anchors out, parted from her moorings, and drifted on to the tail of the boulder bank; she is not injured. Sezeral houses on the sea level were inundated, and the contents damaged, but nothing very serious. At Motueka the wharf was damaged by tho gale. Christchuroh, Saturday. Heavy rain has fallen incessantly since Thursday evening,/ and still there is no sign of tho weather clearing. It is impossibk" for the cricket match to be played to-day. Dunedin, Sunday. The rain has ceased here to-day, but a strong sontherly gale is blowing. Fourteen members of the Dunedin police force have applied for transference on account of the order recently issued by Inspector Weldon requiring them' to wear their uniform at certain hours when off duty. The High School endowment at Wyndham, Mataura district, was sold by auction yesterday, in rural, suburban, and town lots. The total amount realised was £17,632. Reefton, Sunday. John Callaghan, shoemaker, yesterday, on the metalled road jumped four feet ten and half inches for a wager of £30; this is the champion standing jump in the Australasian colonies, being half an inch ovor previous records.
