Mr would like to know how Mr Stewart arrived at tho happy conclusion that narrow gua*6 railways would be tho cheapest aha best that could be adopted in., this country ; how the, monoy was' to be raised to 'dofray the cost of construction, &c, •• Mr Stowart: Narrow guago railways have been found to answer admirably in Wales and various othbr. places throughout Europe. '/He would bo in favour of building such lines of railway by means of private enterprise. A narrow guage line of railway below Tauranga and'thoHot Lakes was now about to, bo constructed by a company of Tauranga gentlemen, and hp was of opinion that tliis lino would ultimately be carried right through to Paeroa, via. Katikati and Owharoa. YA voice: ".Why not comraonco at'this end ?") At this juueturo Mr Stewart underwent a severe cross-examination, at the hands of Messrs Comes and Porter, Mr Stewart charged theso gentlemen with haying followed him round' from place, to placo with a view to creato disturbance: at his meetings. I am pleased to see that something tangible is at last about to bo done in tho construction of tho Martha battery, and

water raco. Instructions havo been ro- 1 ceivcd by Mr Henry Crump, mining,cngi- 1 neer, to prepare plans and. specifications 1 and call tenders for the removal of the | Karangahsko battery. Mr Crump,is now j busy taking the ncceskary levels for tram- < way, &c. A tramway is also being laid j off from the Younj> Colonial tunnel'to a ; point on tho Wailn Company's tramway. i . I have visited the new find at Tauka'uehi, j Two largo areas havo bceri'marked off,— i one by Sims and party and the other by' < that well-known prospector, Dan Leahy., I There is an Immense body of quartz inter- ■ Becting the ground taken up by these i parties. It outcrops from a .considerable i distanco along tho surface, and evidently, I is of a highly auriferous character. From | various placcs along the outcrop wo broke i off small pieces of quartz, which, when i subjected to the mortar and dish process, ! yielded fair prospects., I also tried t the : sandstono, which is somewhat similar to i that found in the Smile of mine - i boing intermixed with innumerable quartz < stringers; the prospects obtained there- i from wore really astonishing. At tlm i time of my visit none of tho party aboro i referred to wero present, so 'that I i was obliged to •" fossick 'I around on 1 my own account. Taukanchi is a bald < bluff, situato at the entrance to the i celebrated Waihautuea gorge, and within ] easy distance of the .Karangahako bat- i tory. It is to bo hopsd that tho 1 present proprietors; of this battery i will reconsider their/decision respecting i its. removal...to ,Waihij. and coneludo i to leave it stand where ■ it now isj for oro many months have passed away there will bo an abundanco of payable qiinrtz awaiting treatment in its immediate neighbourhood. • MR, SI§VART AT I'AEROA.
