POLICE COURT.-Yesterday.

Before HARRY lUI. Alleged Gum Stealing.—Three aboriginals, named Wiremu Nera, Baiwliara, and Hikika, were brought up charged with having in thoir possession about one ton of kauri gum, which Bobert Kolly, of Hikutaia, claimed as his properly. -<• Mr Sub-Inspector Kenny stated that the accused had been arrested that morning, at Hikutaia, by Constables Oleary • and Hogan, despatched for the purpose, from information received by the police. A. number of witnesses who claimed to be part owners of tho gum had volunteered to give evidence, but time was asked to get them together.— -The accused, when charged with the offence by the Court, through Mr Interpreter Puckey, alleged. that they were part owners of the gum, and only detained it until they wore paid their share of its value. If they had taken the gum, as alleged, they would not have remained to be captured and brought before the Court.—The Magistrate remanded the ease until 2 o'clock next day, accused to be released on their own recognizances, in the sum of £20 for their appearance when called upon.—Accused asked if they could be provided with some food at the Government expense, as they had been brought so far to answer a frivolous charge.
