SHOOTING AN EDITOR

On Friday evening, April 23, about 8 o'clock, the Bev Isaac M, lalloch, son : of < Mayor lalloch, of San Francisco, entered the Chronicle office, and attacked Charles De Young, the senior proprietor, pistol in hand, After delivering threeTahots to no effect, the fourth struck De Young in the ' mouth as he Crouched behind the offloa--oounter for protection, and took such e-. course >that it out the jugular veuv oausmg ; '|is: death in about seven minutes.' , In the 'office, the usual number of olerks and other'employees were present, Da Young himself was armed with a pistol and bowie knife, and it is a subjeot off> general surprise that the assailant was ~ not checked before he had completed the >■'"' homicide, When he; fired tho fatal shot, % the muzzle of the pistol was so close to' ' De Young's face that the skin was burned and discoloured by the powder.. This deplorable affair is only another step in what may be considered a vendetta between the De Young and Kalloeh, families, Some months ago.it will be remembered, the man Just killed attempt* ed to take the life ot the elder Kalloeh (and very nearly snooeeded), for having, in a speech made in the heat of a political oampaign, defamed his mother and questioned the legitimacy of himself and other members of his family. This was called out by a vile attaok made in the Chronicle on' Kalloch's father, then dead, and on Kallooh himaelf, In this assault, with intent to murder, Do Young was made .to answer, and the trial was fixed for the 3rd of May. It is oharged that since the attempt on Kalloch's life strenuous attempts have been made, in an under* .hand way, to blaoken Kalloch's character and previous reoord, so that publio opinioa might be enlisted against him, and indirectly affeot, favourably for De , Young, the jurymen to sit in his oase. Among the other steps taken on the part of the defendant, aa is alleged, was tta circulation of a pamphlet, in which tho Court proceedings and evidence were compiled,.concerning Kallooh's trial for adultery while pastor of a church in Boston in 1857. These were sent to nearly every person of influence in the community. Young Kallooh did not see this pamphlet'■ until the evening of the shooting, and then only an hour before, he accomplished it," He went - i immediately and armed himself, proI ceoded to the Chronkh office, and killed [ the man who, as. he believed, had revived the vile record, find put. it in circulation. I Tho end of the unfortunate man is a sad! commentary on the reokless style of i journalism that has prevailed, in this [ city for some time past. The common, tary is emphasised by the faot that, while the body was being taken from the office to the morgue, a large mob of people sofar forcot the decency and propriety of the occasion as to give a succession of cheors for Kailoch, and hootings for his victim. It was a ghastly soouo. The jury at the inquest found against Kalloclj a verdict of murder.
