DEATH OF MR J. S. MACFARLANE.

Anotheb of the old land marks has been removed-another of New Zealand's best friends has gone to his rest-John Sangstet? Macfarlane expired yesterday at his residence in Auckland, after a brief illness from cancer in tho stomaoh, Auckland and the Thames could well have spared others with higher pretensions than the one who has just passed away. A truer friend, in every sense, the Thames in its earliest struggles did not possess. No merchant or capitalist came earlier to aid in our development, or contributed more freely and' steadily to our existence, "In the oause that laoked assistance" ho was always to be found with heart and hand alike open to assist in any honest or honourable enterprise that could claim any chanoe of success; nor did he withdraw his support on honourable defeat ormisfortune, For the wrongs that needed resistance ho was equally ready, and many a one whom he has left behind, and some who have preceded him have honoured him for his kindly intervention and support when the cold shadow of adversity, intensified mayhap, by a demand for tho last pound of flesh, on the pari of a relentless creditor, has assailed them. In such cases he was the " friend in need," a very bulwark of defence. Auckland's fair city owes him much, most of its great commercial enterprises have been asßisted by his knowledge and experience, and not a few of them aro indebted to him for thoir existence. Although a man of large views, and until very recently engaged in extensive business transactions, the smaller affairs,,,to many in his station, were not unregarded. The hopes and fears of the small, perhaps poor and struggling, settler or tradesman, received ready attention and support in every case bearing tho true trade mark of selfreliance, and nothing pleased him belter than to assist the energetic and honest aspirant to a position of independence. His funeral takes place to-day in Auckland, and a number of Thames residents have gone up to attend the remains to their tost resting.placoo
