THE PRINCE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY.

The enthusiasm displayed in Auckland over this event does not appear to have abated one jot this year. There were an abundance of exonrsinns and picnic par!iea to Hangitoto, Kohimirama, Waiwera, Brown's Island, Motuilii, Devonport, Moiulapu, and other places of interest. t Lake I akapuna the annual races were held. There were fife events. For the Maiden Plate Fusee was the winner; for the f'akapona Cup Handicap Darkey was first; for the Handicap Hurdle Kace, Nellie was foremost; Mr Birry's Torpedo won the race, and Caraotaeus the Consolation mce, The running was good and much gratification given to the numbers of persons present.

At Hllerslie Gardens there was the usual programme of sports, and the Gardens were at their very best. F, ff. McGinley won the 100 yards handicap; B. Gault, the 200 yards; Davis, the 300 yards; E. the4fioyards; the 500; and the 600. R. McGinley thus won the Ist prize of £20 and oop; B. Gault, £6 and onp, Taylor and Davis tied and divided the stakes, and Benwiok a oup. The Tradesman's Athletic Club sports were held on the Ellerslie liace-course, and resulted as follows:-Maiden Baee, Dalton 1; 100 yds Handicap, Martin;, Boys' Baee, Cox; 3 miles Walking Race, Hendry; 150 yds Handioap, Cummings; l*mile Handicap, Hendry ; half-mile do., Ohiplin; 200 yds Handicap, Martin, The principal event of the day undoubtedly was the Agricultural and Pastoral Show held "at Ellerslie. The general desire expressed that the show for the year 1879 should be superior to any of the preceding events, and the Association's efforts, being ably seconded by the general public, proved eminently successful. The weather was beautiful, the attendance large, the arrangements perfect, and the success unqualified. Among the prize-takers we notice the names of the following Messrs Ehrenfried Brothers, ales and porters; Messrs Mennie and Dey* biscuits. Mr Macky, the newly appointed agent for the dinger's Sewing Machine Company, had a splendid collection of sewing machines, .thread, &c. This drew large number of ladies to his stand. Nearly 20 machines, of some of the various patterns, made by the.company, were exhibited, to the pleasure and edification of many.
