MINING MATTERS.

MoAMATAiAW.-On the 218 feet level tho manager is engaged in driving a crosscut northward for the purpose of finding out whether the lode in the drive is No. 9 or not. He is of opinion that it is not, as it has not got the same appearance as No 9 had in the upper lovels, although gold is occasionally soon in the quartz. The winze which is being sunk from the level above is going down through rich country, and good progress is boing mado. At the 80-feet level men are employed on No. 3 reef, but not enough work has. been done on it yet to prove its value. In the Point .Russell section stoping operations have been commenced on the lode which is of good size and shows occasional colours of gold. At the battery 25 head of stainpers are being employed on company's dirt, which is shaping pretty fairly. Tributes: Williams and party's trial is still looking woll, and on Monday night a good haul of specimens was made. Green and party crushed 120 tons of general dirt at the company's battery for the yield of 49ozs 16dwts melted gold. Hayes and party obtained 12ozs 9dwts gold from 10£ tons general dirt, and McDonald 3ozs 18dwts from 7 tons. Tokatea,—The manager of the Tokatea, under date May 9th, says:-" We cleared up the battery and retorted the amalgam this morning for a yield of 37ozs of retorted gold, being an average of about 7dwts to the ton for the number of tons put through the mill. We started on the No. 2 level on the 7th April crushing from it, as a trial of the stuff, till the 24th; finding it rather poor we came down 100 feet and opened out between Nob. 2 and 3 levels. Siuce the 24th this stuff has been going through, and gave a payable return of Qdwts to the ton. If the battery is kept going through the whole 24 hours on the stuff coming from this block it will pay all expenses for taking out and crushing, and leave a fair margin of profit to the company; at the st>mo time olearing out the old stopes, whioh will permit of prospecting the different branohes running into the foot-wall of the old Tokatea leader, We have cut two leaders in tho ground,.opened out, both showing gold, but having no mullook room at present I have not followed them into' the country, but shall do so when more of the stopes are taken out. Hornibrook and party have broken out from their tribute this week a patch of about 4owt of specimens, which were crushed at the single stamper for a yield of 150ozs lOdwts retorted gold, They have 14 tons general stuff on hand. Majury's and Bannerman'B parties are getting a little gold, but no picked stufi worth saving." Kubanui Hin Tbibote.—Jenkins and party crushed 80lbs of picked stone at the company's mill for the return of 32ozs 15dwts melted gold. Oid Siah.—Another smalltrialorushing for the shareholders of this olaim was completed yesterday,at the Herald.for the return of loz 15dwts melted gold. The amount of quartz treated was 3 loads, and was obtained from the Telegraph lode in the drive going up the hill. The lode is about 2 feet thick, and has a very kindly appearance; but it seems as if it was rather patchy, seeing that the present crushing did not yield as well as the previous one. Work has been susponded for a day or two, pending a meeting of shareholders to decide upon what is best to be done as to the future working of the claim.
