On the result of the poll to-day being made known, there was tremendous excitement. Adams, who was driving in a pony carriage, was stopped, tho poney taken out, and a number of his supporters drew him to his committee room, where there was congratulatory speechifying. The result of the election is regarded here as a strong expression of public opinion against the Catholic, block vote; many of Mr Adams' supporters were earnest in their advocating for secular education per se, and many believed in him for local reasons to be the best representative, but the opposition to the block was strongly marked throughout the whole contest. Up to the declaration of the poll both parties were perfectly sanguine, relying upon the promises made to them, and the large majority obtained surprised everybody.
