MINING MATTERS.

Ktjbamji Hill United Tbihuies. Two crushings for tributers of sections of the Kurauui Hill United mine were completed at the company's battery yesterday for payable returns. One ot those parcels consisted of 30 tons of stull for Lo Manquais and party, which produced 38ozs 16dwts retorted gold; and the other was a 14-ton lot for Hart and party, the yield from which was 22ozs 3dwts melted gold. Several other crushincc3 from ether sections of the mine are now in progress, and some of thorn are likely to yield handsome returns. I Qoeen op the MAY.-The reef at the 'point where the new wmzo had been started did not at first look to be parhcu. larly promising, but after getting down u it a few feet below the level it was found to improve in size.and appearance, and is now as promising-looking a lode as emit has been. It has widened out to its usual size, and fair prospects were observable in it yesterday. The engine shaft contractors arc also making goodheadway. There is nothing special to report from the reofs in the present mam level. Stoping is going on as usua, and both lodes showed gold yesterday. There hasjnotyet been any increase made in the crushing power employed by the company. . _ * Ornr of LoHDoK.-Farihot progress was made yesterday with the drives on

the course of the cross reef of the City of London mine at the new main level, and a still greater improvement than that to which we referred in yesterday's issue was perceptible. The lode is widening out in- both faces, and gold shows as freely as at first, "The manager expects that communication with the No. 1 winze will be effected this morning. Memei) Gora Eeiubns.-Tlio following parcels of gold were melted yesterday at the Bank of New Zealand. We gave the retorted returns in yesterday s issue: -Ajax, 2070zs Idwt; Piako, 97ozs 12 dwts; Queen of Beauty, 5720zs 13dwts; Queen of the May, 2160zs I7dwts; Waitekauri, 3280zs I7dwts; Young Now Zealand, 53ozs 16dwts. WEicojiE.-In reference to the recent gold return from 'the Welcome mine we aro requested by Mr Wicks, battery proprietor, to correct the impression that it was a crushing from the new cross reef. It appears that it was a parcel taken out of a paddock of stuff stowed on the mine, which the company did not consider rich enough to forward to the mill under the present disadvantageous ciroumstances. Mr Wicks, however, at his own risk sledged and crushed 16 tons of it on the understanding that if it did not prove remunerative the loss would be his own, but if it paid more than 28s per ton, the balance should go to the company, Mr Wicks would crush the remainder of the stuff on the same terms, but the directors declined to close with his offer.
