Maodonald, and Dr minutes of the last special meeting were read.—Mr Scott reported that the subcommittee appointed had purchased the allotment seleoted for the work-yard for the turncock for £55, and the Chairman stated that they had started men to fill in the allotment and called for tendors. Tho tenders wore opened, and as the prices were apparently high tho specification was .read, and some amusement was caused by line substantial nature of tho fenco indicated, particularly with regard to the posts, Tho tender of Mr ijloase, at £21 10s, was accepted.— Mr. James Maeky said lie camo to pay bis water rate, but Mr Dean refused to accept less than a year's rate, from now Up to tho end of June, and they wero not /in a position to supply him before. It 'was only recently the sub-main ,was laid down.—Some argument ensued between Messrs Macnab, Macdonald, and Dr Jlilgour.—The Chairman said that if they now made a.' reduction to Mr Macky all those who had taken in the water since July last would be entitled to a refund,—'l he minute of the commifcteo was read, and it stated that only yearly rates could be received.—Mr Gibbons moved that Mr Macky's request cannot

They ascertained that, although tho supply might not be permanent the water would roach the necessary height. A report from Mr Aitken, engineer, was also road, which was to tho same effect, adding that if tho valve near the Hapo Creek was shut off, tho water would roach houses in tho highest situations. -Tho Mayor said that this roport raised a difficulty. Thoy would have to deprive tho people on tho flat, from whom they obtained their principal rovonue, in order to supply a few pooplo on the hills. If it camo to a vole he would not oppose it, for he hoped to see his views carried out, and mains laid down which would afford a more plentiful supply to the hills and to tho township. His only objection was that he did not believe, under present ciroumstances, although they laid the pipes, .that the water would go up.-Mr Gibbons was in favour of having the work done. _ A calculation was entered into, and it was found that the cost would be over £200.— Mr Macnab said he did not think thoy would be justified in laying out this amount on the bare possibility of being able to supply the water to twenty-five houses.—! long discussion ensued, and finally Dr Kilgour proposed that, under present circumstances, the proposal bo not entertained.—Mr Macnab seconded the motion.—Mr Miller moved that, after hearing tho reports of the sub-committee and engineer, the work bo authorised.— Mr Scott seconded the amendment, which was put to the mooting and lost, and tho original motion was put, Dr Kilgour and Messrs Macuab and Gibbons voting for it. The Chairman and Messrs Miller and Scott voted against it, and the Chairman then gave a casting vote against it. The motion was therefore lost.—The Mayor then moved that they proceed with the next business.—Mr Macnab seconded this niotiou.—Mr Miller, as an amendment, moved that the application of the Porawai residents be granted.—Mr Scott soconded tho amend-ment.-The amendment was lost, and tho motion was withdrawn. It referonce to Sealey-street it was agreed to carry out tho recommendation of tho report and lay down an inch pipe. Accounts-Mr Hewitt's account for £10015s was passed for payment.
