MINING "MATTERS.

Queen of. : the MiT.-j-The usual fork nightly retorting for the, Queen of the May G.M.C. was completed on Satur-' day, the return being 2610zs gold, which; ; has been lodged-in-tho'.'Bank of 'New! Zealand for melting. Tho yields as; shareholders and others 'will observe, is; not so. large as that obtained for the; preceding fortnight,'but the - latter was; unusually high. Tho average of .the stuff; is, however/very but there; has not been nearly : so :much quartz'; treated during the last fortnight as thepreceding one, 300 loads representing the; entire crushing. ; . For the ,last..few.,days! only' 14.. head of jtarapers r have .been' working/and' wo understand that, 1 as some' 'difficulty has-been found in keeping-up; tho supply for tho.fuU force, of .BuJIV, battery (whero the company's crushing! is going on); without forwarding a lot of stuff'which is supposed to' lie valueless,] it has been determined, as an experiment,; to crush with a reduced force, and toj select 1 the stuff more carefully than' has-

hitherto been possible. • i ' : - j Queen of Beauty.—Eotorting for the Queen of Beauty Company took place oni Saturday at the .company's own. battery: and at the' Tramway machine after a: fortnight's crushing at the. former with the full force of 20 heaclbf stampers, and

at the latter with 12 head. The quality

of the crushing stuff does not yet show a| very marked improvement, hotwithstand-; ing the very favourable changer which-has! ■ taken placein the reef towards the City I of London boundaryj-but a comparatively j small .proportion; of the stuff came; fromj this section of the mine, and at. the other j end, although there has.been ; good gold; showing in a football leader, : the general j : quality of'!the reef has;.notimproyedj materially... The returns are nevertheless) pood■ payable ones, that from the com-; piiuy's mill being- 189ozs, and : from tho,: Tramway 1220zs lOdwts,- making a total! ef 311ozs lOdwts. This has been lodged:

at tho Bank of Now Zealand,' 1 whore it

will be melted to-day.-'. ' ; ■■ ; •'Red"Qot3En.—We are pleased to 'find! that the. . good reputation , which! tho •Eed'.; 'Queen 'Company's 'mine; earned I ''last 1 ., wock ; ; .by. •_.producing; a series of three handsome rich yields, is, further, advanced .by a continued;good' show of, gold iiii.the mine,.especially .in; the No. 6 reef, in that portion of it which: is being worked by the company. From 1 this source a fine parcel of 40lbs of. specimens came, to baud on,- Saturday; evening, and tho prospects' of the reef; continue very satisfactory,'"Nelson and l party,-who had a very rich yield from their crushing last week, have also made a good start towards another rich yield, for they procured a parcel of 201bs of rich stone on Saturday evening, and this is ■likely to.be further .augmented to; a considerable exteut by the result of to-day's operations. There will [ noV we believe, be any crushings either for the company or the tributers-this,; week, but the No. 6 reef, which'is'being'worked by tho former, is of considerable size, and no doubt by next week a quantity sufficient to form a respectable crushing .will.be available.

Esd White abd Biue Tbibutb.—A fortnight's crushing for Green and party was finished on Saturday at the .Moanataiari battery, and a yield which has proved satisfactory to all interested was tho result, viz., 53ozs'2dwts 6grs melted gold. There was a considerable quantity of stuff reduced during the fortnight, and the averago per ton is only moderato, but tho stuff is so easily obtained and the arrangements for crushing are of such a nature that a very moderate return leaves a margin of profit, and under no circumstances can the whole of the gold proceeds be swallowed up in the.crushing expenses. The arrangements with regard to the crushing are that the Moanataiari Company takes half the gross proceeds in payment, and the balanco belongs to the. tributers. Recent returns have paid both parties to the' contract well. Caledonian.—Mr James, who has re-

cently been employed as manager of the jj Bright Smile old battery, has succeeded *' Captain Eichards as manager of the {• Caledonian mine, James is. ..a.com- ? paralively recent arrival at the 'Thames;, ?' and has not hitherto been engaged in a *\ similar capacity bero, but he has been ij strongly recommended to ,tho directors, * and has the re'putatibn of being a first-class F miner and an able manager, At present we: 1! understand his duties,will bo light, as l operations on the company's behalf are c temporarily suspended, but the whole of c the upper levels have, been lot to fcribu- c tors, of whom six parties are now carry- ' ing on operations, some of them with very l fair success/ Balshaw and party, who c have a large amouut of perse- j veranceinthe face of poor/returns,, coin- ( pleted a very satisfactory crushing of 12 ( tons of stone at the Prince Alfred battery • on Saturday, as the result of which they ' banked 74oz's iOdw'ts. 7 gold, ! being an ] average return of "better than 6ozs to the - ton. Ladybird.—Jenkins and party, the shareholders of the : 'Ladybird 'claim, Tinker's Gully, Tararu, deposited 21ozs 17dwts melted gold on Saturday in the Bank of New Zealand as the result obtained from a crushing at the liussell battery, the amount of stuff treated being 130 tons. The return, although low, leaves a fair margin of : proSfc. : Aibubhu TBinuTEs.-Hetortings for three parlies working tributo sections m the Alburnia Company's mine, took place on Saturday at the Moanataiari battery, and in each instance the yields were splendid ones for the quantity of stuff treated. The largest quantity was 26 tons for George Downie and party, the yield from which was lOSozs gold. The other two lots were picked stuff, that for Barclay and party, consisting of Icwt, : which yielded 20ozs 15dwts gold, and that for Allen and party, 3501b5, which produced 79ozs lodwts, thus making tho total return from 26 tons 'icwt, 208ozs lOdwts gold. WEicoiiE.-The directors of the WolBoino G.M.C., Waitekauri, held a meeting on Saturday eveniug, at which the pestion, of the mode which should: bo adopted for future operations, was brought under discussions. Mr P. W. Donnelly, one of the directors, who, at the request of the others, had visited the sompauy's mine, submitted a report dotailing tho present position of the mine ind tho'extont of ground opened. He rejommendcd that crushing should pended on tho termination of tho present sontract with Mr-Wick: until, such tinio as a belter means of transit, jithor by tramway or road, was available, wd that tho main or Wo. 2 crosscut should bo oxtonded to tho western boundary, in order to inlorsect tho Young New Zealand lode.' He ■ also ■recommended that a now low lovel should be started to Dpen the lodes at a level which would ifford'good backs for stoping, and a; convenient outlet from the mine. It was decided to push on the Mo. 2 cross-cut by letting a contract tor driving 300 feet, aud also to drivo north on tho main reef by day work. It was agreed to suspend crushing, in accordance with tho reoom.'

mendatiori made, but the consideration; of the new low level until a future; meeting* Crushing- for the company willbe resumed to-day,'ahd will, it"is' under-j stood, be terminated'about tho 17th inst.;

POLICE COTJBT.-Sawedat. (Before Captaiu Goldsmith, J.P., and E. W. POCKET, Esq., J.P.)

DiiUNKBNHEss.-Toroiri, alias Friday,, and Hugh McDonnell, alias _ Thomas; Brown, were charged with having been; drunk and'incapable.'-The former ad-; milted the offence, and was fined 10s and costs, or, in default, 24 hours' imprisonment. The latter also pleaded guilty, and was fined in a similar amount. ::_.;
