A special meeting of the Eauwaer'anga School Committee, convened by a quorum of members, in accordance with the 13th section of the Education Act, 1872, was held yesterday afternoon at the Boys' School, Shortland.' The notice convening' the; meeting, which! had been sighed by Messrs Douglas, Day, and Mcllhone, was. as follows:—"Sir,—We beg to inform, you that a meeting.of the Kauwaeranga, School' Committee will, beheld at the Boys' School 3 o'clock p.m, for;; the .transaction of general business.; And wo further; beg to assure you that both parson;and opinion j will bo treated with respect; Shortland,., October 5,1876." There were presentMessrs Douglas, Day, and Mcllhone.— ' Mr Mcllhone said it would no doubt be; fresh in the minds of the members present that in consequence of Mr Grigg's action three of them had resolved that that they would not recognise hith' any' longer as chairman of the committee.. There were some doubts on his (Mr Mcllhone's) mind as to tho legality of their action, but since the last meeting he had seen tho 'Secretary of the Central Board, and had taken legal advice, arid'wag now quite certain that a majority of the committee wasquite justified in meeting and conducting 1 Ithe business of the school district so long as notice had, as in tho present instaneo, been served on the other members of the committee. He concluded by proposing 1 that Mr Douglas be chairman of the' committee.—Mr Day seconded the motion, whioh was carried, and the chairiman took his seat.—The following letter from. Mr Field, head teacher of the boys' school, was read:—"Kauwaeranga Boys'. School, October 5, 1876. To the local' committee of the school. Gentlemen,— : I notice.in a report of your proceedings last Friday, published in one of thenews-: papers circulating on the Thames, that ;your chairman, Mr Grrigg, stated; that' 'Mr Field had given half-holidays on several occasions unknown to the committee." Aal am inclined to think it to bo a mistake, will you kindly mention tho matter at your next meeting that the assertion made, may be as publicly, contradicted. Such a statement is certainly incorrect, as I have never given a haltholiday sinco having the charge of the school.-"! have, .'etc., .Ooiatius .A.' Field?'—On the motion of Mr Mcllhone; Mr : .Day; was. appointed secretary, and was instructed Jo communicate with the Central Board, informing them of the result of this meetingi; and requesting that all future, correspondence;with the committee be addressed to Mr Day, the secretary, and also to notify the yariouß school teachers to the same, effect.—The meeting then terminated.
