In our comments on tbe death of Mr J. Lenton in yesterday's issue a slight error crept in. The injury which lis sustained was the loss of the top join's of the second and third fingers of his left, not his tight hand. Mr Lenton leaves a wife and three children—two girls aud a boy—to mourn his death.

We are requested, to correct an erroneous impression which was conveyed to the minds of some in our report of the meeting held at the Wesleyan Church on the Sabbath school anniversary. It was stated that the average attend* ancc of scholars was 152, and this, although correct in itself, has conveyed a impression. The average attendant in the afternoon is 112, and in the morning 40.

A larqe party availed themselves yesterday o£ the invitition of the directors of the Waitekauri Gold Mining Company, and proceeded to Okincuiuri by the 'Ruby' in order to be present at the first retorting for Ihe company, and tbe formal opening of the battery, which takes place to-day. A good deal of speculation has been indulged in, relative not only to the probable return from the company's crushing, bnt the total amount of the escort which is to come down this evening, including the gold resulting from the Waitekauri, the Welcome, and the Young New Zealand crushings. The latter, we observe by our correspondent's letter dated yesterday, is exceeding expectations, and is expected to average lOozs to the ton. The parcel put through consisted of 25 tons.

Mrs Honiss, secretary of the Ladies' Benevolent Society, requests us to acknowledge receipt of £6 8s 3d, the nett proceeds of a benefit performance given by Barlow's Circus Company in aid ot the fundi of the Society.

We are glad to be able to state that the salmon ova taken up to the heads of the Waipa and Waikato rivers last year, by.Mr J, C. The Counties Bill has been reprinted with the alterations made by the Government, The direction of the amendments made, will be understood from tliefollowing summary. Provision is made for what are termed outlying districts, by which is meantany part of a county not included in a Road District, and the Governor may divide such part into districts, or such part may be formed into a Boad District, Every county is to be divided into ridings, but. there must not be more than nine in any county, and every riding must comprise the whole of one or more road districts or outlying districts • The County Council at its first meeting may determine by reso'ution that certain portions of the Act shall not come into force in the county, and this resolution must be sent to the Colonial Secretary, If sueh a resolution is not passed, the whole Act comes into force, If the resolution is passed, the County Council shall thereafter only meet to fill vacancies in its own body, by determining disputed elections, or for. the purpose of passing a resolution bringing the whole Act into force in the county, which resolution, once passed, cannot be rescinded or altered. New counties may be created after due notice, on the petition of one-fonrth of the county electors within the portion proposed to be separated ; but the General Assembly, within ten days of its Bexfc meeting, may by resolution stop such new county being created. Two or more counties may in like manner be created on petition of one-third of the electors in each. On petition of one-third the ratepayers in any Road Districts possessing one-half the rateable property therein, the County Courcil may, after due notice, dissolve any Koad Board, and merge the district in the county. The provisions as to the eleclim of chairman are a good deal amplified, a?, indeed, is the whole Bill, although the new one has a few more clauses than the o'd one. Its object is to leave it to eicb. County Council wlisu elected to declare whether it will or will not have County Government.

Between t'e hours of five and six yesterday evening, a narrow escape from drowning happened to two young gentlemen. in> the harbour. It appears that Messrs Clark and Yatts were out for a spin in the Auckland llowing Club's' Fly,' a pair-oared batswing, in.com-

with the four-oared gig. They reached very near to the man-of-war ground, when: it was noticed that the water was too lumpy for the frail boat, and the occupants then began to pull for the lee of the new wharf. Before this could be reached, however, a sei came right over her, and sent her down stern foremost, precipitating the amateurs into the water. 'I'heir unenviable and dangerous position was instantly noticed by those ou board H.M.S. 'Nymphe,' and also the C üb'a gig, and the former piped away one of their boats, while the gig pulled vigorously to the aid of their'companions,' and succeeded in picking them up. 'iho boat from the 'Nymphb took the batswing in tow, and landed it at the cub-house. L It was exceedingly fortunate that assistance was so close at hand. Now that the siasou is opening, we may give a wotd of caution to those who indulge in the pleasures of boating in our har< hour,—* Jicrald.'
