MINING MATTERS.

Impobtant Find in Tabaiuj,—A find, which appears to be one of very considerable importance, occurred in Tararu, in the neighbourhood of tho Little Agnes claim, on Tuesday aftornoon, and, as is frequently the case with discoveries of this sort, it was more the result of accident than design. A carter named Thomas Dunlop, who has been employed conveying quartz from tho Little Agnes to the Missouri battery,, while his horses were feeding near the tramway, commenced fossicking about near the lower paddock of the Little Agnes claim, and struck on a good sized reef.' The appearance of the quartz was good, and he porsevered fossicking and breaking stones, and was not occupied at this work long before he was rewarded by seeing gold in the stone.' He then marked out a claim, in which Messrs Darrow, Wilson, Connell, and others took shares, and it was duly applied for, and registered yesterday. The prospect is considered a very fair one. The reef, which is apparently of considerable size, is entirely distinct from the Little Agnes lode, but it ha? the same kindly, promising appearance, and is surrounded by a fine class of country. Of coui'so until it is developed to some extent nothing definite can be known regarding the worth of the find, but the prospects so far are very promising, and the shareholders are in good spirits, and will immediately proceed to work their claim.

Countess.—Gold has also been struck in tho Countess claim, adjoining the Little Agues, in what, beyond doubt, is a continuation of the lode which has yielded such rich returns to the shareholders of the latter. It was met with recently in a tunnel put in for tho purpose, but when the lode came to hand it was small and 'was not recognised. Its course was, however, driven upon, and it developed into a good, stronglode, in which a good show if gold was found yesterday. Litim Agnes.—The crushing which is now going on. at tho Missouri battery for the Little Agnes is showing up for the customary excellent average. There was uo gold lodged by the shareholders last Saturday, tho week's crushing not having been a full one, but a retorting took place, as the result of which there aro now 1350z3 gold on hand. This will bo vory largely supplemented by tho result of the present week's crushing, so that on Saturday,- when the general retorting takos place, thero will be a very respectable lodgment of gold to make from this claim as the result of less than a fortnight's crushing with 15 head of stampers. AiiBUBNiA. — The manager yesterday lodged in the Bank of New Zealand, and had melted, a bar of gold weighing 49oza lOdwts, tho result of a crushing which was completed sovoral days ago. There was also a parcol of 12ozs 15dwts lodged

"■■g by George and party, who are working a tribute in the mine, tho yield from a parcel of 15 tons crushed for them at tho Moanataiari battery,
