MINING MATTERS.

Ceown PniNOKSs,—A cleaning up and retorting for the Crown Princess Company tebk place yesterday at the old Bright Smije battery, after 80 tons ef stone had been put through, and a'good profitable yield oM33ozs Gdwts was the result obtained. This is: a satisfactory result, considering; the miscd^:olti!io^of stone put through, including, as it did, quartz from every reef in the mine, and it is all.the more encouraging as the whole of the stuff has been derived from the lowest level of the mine. ' It is a pity, with suoh 'encouraging prospects before them, that the company cannot now proceed to extend their operations j but this mine, like all the other principal ones, on the Waio-Karaka flat, is now flooded, and operations are suspended, only temporarily, we hope, for there are some blocks available in the level above the waterline which might be advantageously worked. This is a question which will be taken; into consideration by thedirectors at their- meeting on Tuesday next, and we'hope at the same time they will agree to such measures as may be necessary to ensure the Bright Smile pumps being promptly started to.'work. Spbinghill.—A small parcel of stuff has been crushed for the tributers of the Springhill, for a yield of 2ozs Bdwts melted gold. ■ Canaby,—A -trial crushing-, from the Canary claim;/Collarbone, produoed a payable return of loz 3dwts. melted.gold. There was, we believe, only a ton treated. -.- :

Cube.—The manager yesterday commenced the course of the new reef whioh had recently been intersected in the foot-wall drive, about 160 feet beyond the No. 5 reef.; There is not much yet known regarding the this reef further than that it is fine-looking quartz, well oharged with minerals, but by the time the drive on its course reaches 30 feet, the junction of the -small quartz vein which was. intersected still more, recently, with this'larger'or No. 6 reef will be met with, and there is a strong probability thaVgold will be found at this junction.

Caledonun.—The prospects of the Caledonian mine are still satisfactory. There is gold showing steadily through the No. 5 reef in the stopes, and' the new cross-reef also shows gold in fair quantities, and has shown up for a handsome average at the crushing mill, : .

MoANATAiABi.-Tho usual fortnightly retorting for the Moanataiari Company will take : place to-morrow, and the re : salt, we have overy reason to believe, will be quite equal to the comparatively good; returns which have, resulted from, the recent crushings. There is: no question but; that the opening of the Noi 2 reef at the 70-feet level of "this wine has placed the company in a much better position than it has occupied for a,long time, and a succession oi such returns as those which arc now being obtained will soon place the company in a sound financial position, ',•.-'■'■'.',..'. West Coast.—A crushing for Weathorall and party,' tributers of the West Coast mine, was commenced last night at the Waiotahi battery with a force of 10 head of stampers; The recent crushingß for.this party have been highly remunerative, and as there is now a considerable lot of about 100 tons.on hand, which is supposed to be quite as rich in quality as any formerly crushed, the tributers may look forward to a handsome gold yield before the holidays set in.. •-■

A traveller, stopping overnight with a Texan farmer whose estate was miles upon miles in extent, said to him, " You must bare began life very early to accumulate such an estate as this," 'Yes.";replied the farmer, "Ibegatt lifo when I was a mere baby,"
