OPENING OF THE BOATING SEASON.

The boating season was opened on Saturday afternoon by a procession of boats from the Shortland Wharf to the Goods Wharf, Grahamstown. and back again to the point of starting. .It bad been arranged that the procession should start at half-past 3 o'clock, but a delay ensued in ' consequence of many of those who should have represented the senior club, the Thames Bowing Club, being absent at the cricket match in Parawai. After some delay, the crews were got together and the boats launched. There were three clubs represented, viz,, the Thames Bowing Club, in the lead; the Naval Brigade Boating Club, second*; and the Magenta Club, which closed the ■procession. ~ A large crowd assembled on the wharf to witness the turn-out. There were in all 9 boats, including 6 gigs, 2 wager boats, 1 eight-oared whaleboat, and 2 single-handed scullers' boats. The whaleboat brought up the rear. The procession was in single file to Grahamstown. . Some of the smaller boats were considerably put about by the lumpy sea which prevailed,' On the return from Grahamstown all the boats came abreast as far as the lamp-post off Shortland, from which they put on a spurt and camo in to the wharf in the best manner they could On the whole the turn-out was a very good one undor the circumstances, although the crews wore in some cases mixed ones. :
