To the Editor, of thoi'iuaiES ADVBBrisuit. ; Sib,—Tho above question is ia a good many mouths just evidently do not kno'w • the meaning of the word "Charon," .for if they did they would not care to know the man who would sail under such colours. ■ The' iollowing.quotation will explain :-" Charon, a god of hell, son of Erebus and Nox,who conducted the souls of' the dead in' a boat over the rivers Styx and Acheron to the infernal regions for an obulus (penny) placed under the tongue of the deceased. Such as had not. boeri honoured with a funeral were not permitted to enter his boat without previously wandering on shore for one hundred years. Charon is represented a 9 an old robust.man witha ihidedus countenance, long white beard, :and piercing eyes" If this is what the 'Thames " Charon" aims at, the less people have to do with him the better.— I am, &c, • Not a Heathen. ; November 5,1875,
