OHINEMUM.
(eboji our own cobbespondent.)
! October 29. Messbs Clayton and . Munro, of the Trigonometrical Survey' .Department, arrived from Waihi on Wednesday evening, intending to complete the checking of connections between Karangahake, Pukelawa, and the small hills at the back of Paeroa. On Thursday morning they proceeded to work, and put up a temporary flag in lieu of the beacon pulled down, but as soon as the Whakatohea natives noticed it, thoy pulled that down also. I have not heard whether the surveyors had time to finish taking their observations or not. '*'. : The Slar correspondent has quoted, half a line for my benefit, and I will now make him a present of the remainder— "Thou * * * great in villainy." Some gentlemen in receipt of Government pay affect to despise penny-a-liners, for, as Shakespeare says," small things make base men proud.' However, my gross friend may " toot his hom" as long as he feels inclined for all I : care. The "whirligig of time brings in his revenge," and certain members of the Mackaytown Star Combination Troupe may yet find themselves • upon the "horns of a dilemma."
Wo aro again getting very unsettled weather. Mr Thorp is busy sheep-shear-ing, and the natives have been going in heavy on the whitebait which is now in season.
