Mr Waterhouse moved:—"That, in the opinion of this Council, the purchase the native lands by 'the Government should, in due regard for the best interests of the colony, be conducted with the Host scrupulous integrity and honour, ind that therefore it is incumbent upon ,he Government to exercise the greatest jare in the selection of agents for that important duty."—Carried. The following motion by Mr Kenny was lost:—"That .with a view to the settlement of the matters the subjetft of the Piako Land Exchange .Bill (No. 2), it is expedient in the opinion of this Council that that bill should be withdrawn by the Government, and that the Government should afford jMr Whitaker every facility and assistance in arranging with the natives for the survey of the land for which he has been awarded a Crown grant by the Land Claims Commissioner, or in otherwise effecting an aquitable arrangement with the natives." PROTECTION JOB MB BBIDGBS. • A Bill to amend the Parliamentary Privileges Act was received from the Lower House, and the Standing Orders were suspended, on the motion of the Premier, in order to proceed to its consideration at once. The bill was read a second time, with trifling comment, and passed through Committee and all stages without amendment.
