Hokitika, Monday. The manager of tho Freight Company has written to the Borough Council intimating that tho company havo resolved on towing vessels in ballast for this port freo of charge. Tho Council decided that all tug boats belonging to the port, when towing-in vessols in ballast, will be free of post charges, It is understood that tho

sawmill proprietors have agreed to subsidise the Tug Company by £1,000 per annum for towage of vessels with ballast inwards and timber outwards.. ■ . Dunbdin, Monday. A ceremony at the Synagogue yesterday, on the occasion of the consecration of the now Scroll of the Law, was a very grand affair. The building was crowded, Singing by tho choir is described as, the best hoard' here in any church. The Habbi preached an eloquent sermon in HobreWi and translated dach paragraph. The amount collected for the building fund was £152.—Henderson and law estimate their loss at the fire at £7,000. ■All tho loss is covered, but the offices are not yet given.-At a meeting of the Standard Insurance Company to-day, the report showed the gross income from all; sources is £27,529.17s 9d, and after do-

'Ihe insurances on Henderson law for the lato firo at the Phoenix warehouse are :— Victoria, £1,600 on stock; National, £1,000 on stock,- £1,000 on building; Boyal, £650 on stock. Mr Dick was also insured for £300 in the Koyal for goods stored in the warehouso, and Houghton for £250 in the samo office.
