MINING MATTERS.

Dauntiess . and Eink-to-Bise.— A small crushing of three tons of si one including picked stuff, was finished yesterday at tho Prince Alfred battery. Tho yield was a very good one of IGozs odwts gold. The crushing was for Sykes and party, tributers of No. 4 section of tho Dauntless and Sink-to-Kise Company's mine. ' •

Shototbb- Teibuie.-A small trial parcel has been crushed at the Kuranui' battery for Dabb and party, tributers of the Shotover mine, but the yield was poor only amounting to 18]ozs from 30 tons of stuff.

Cobnelian Cum, Taibua.—lt is gratifying to notice that tests from new areas in the Tairua Goldfield continue to. afford promising evidence of tho distribution of gold in that locality. Yesterday a small parcel of 131bs which had been taken out of tho reef opened in the Cornelian claim, Tairuayielded a pennyweight of gold, or an average of Bozs 12dwts to tho ton, The stuff was treated by Mr Quint, who took every precaution to have tho tost made au accura'o ono by carefully cleaning out all tho implements employed in the crushing' before the stuff was put through. The claim adjoins tho Sandhurst, Dividend, and Ophir, and the reef from which this test was taken is six feet thick. Tho parcel was brought down by Mr Fincher,. who took it promiscuously from tho face of the lode, the trial being for tho satisfaction of tho shareholders themselves. We learn that the prospects obtained from tho stuff manipulated.on the ground havo proved quite as rich, or even richer, than that which was tested yesterday, and the shsreholders aro now satisfied that they have not only a fino strong reef, .but a rich ono to work upon. Windsor Castle Tbibute.—A parcel of stuff was crushed yesterday for the tributers of tho Windsor Castle mine, which yielded a return of 13oz-i 12dwts gold, for which about 20 tons were crushed.

Tookey -Mobgah's Tbibute. — Tho yield obtained from tho parcel of stone crushed at the Prineo Alfred battery for Morgan and party, tributers of a section of tho Tookey mine at the 200-feet level, is 3ozs 15dwts. There were 6| tons put through, so that iho'result is not payable. Crown Puincess.—ln order to mjko ready for opening fresh levels on the reef before tho present ones become exhausted, tho company has decided on sinking the main shaft to a depth of 310 feet and opening out on tho reefs at that depth. It is not anticipated that there will be very hard ground to sink through, so that tho contractors wilj probably make rapid progress with their work, and judging from tho improvement in tho lodes as greater depth on them has hitherto been reached, as well as the good stone which in many iustances has been left on tho floor of the drive, it is anticipated that the new level will prove still richer, and it is certain that a much greater length will bo obtained, because the slide which lias hitherto cut off the lodes at'tho seaward end ia dipping away very flat, so that an additional length of 40 feet on the No. 2 reof was obtained at tho present main level more than was available at the level 70 feot abovo it. Tho manager is now driving on the course, of tho No. 3 reef towards its junction with the-speci-men lode, and during the last ten feet of. driving gold has shown freely, and somo good picked stuff has been obtained from it. There will probably bo some rich stone found when tho junction of those two lodes is reached.

Bbioht Smile,—Retorting for the Bright Smile Company will take place to-day. This will bo tho first cleaning up, sinco tho starting of the new battery a month ago, and tho result will no doubt be looked forward to with interest by the public as well as the shareholders. We have reason to believe that tho return will bo a satisfactory one, notwithstanding somo stoppages which took place in the early part of the crushing, and the inferior class of stone which was first forwarded to tho mill, intentionally, in order to get the plates into working order and the crevices filled up j in fact, to take away tho goneral roughness incident to a now plant. Daring tho last three weeks everything has been working satisfactorily, and .wo believe tho yield to bo obtained to-day will afford substantial proof of tho payablo charactor of the. reefs at tho 350 feefc level, and of tho step adopted by tho company in securing for themselves powerful and adequate crushing machinery, Cube.—The show of gold which was left in the face of the slope on Thursday night led, as might bo expected, to another good lot of picked stone and some specimens being obtained yesterday, and we are glad to learn that gold' still shows in the face. In fact there is every prospect of this block close against | the Caledonian boundary proving very rich. Some of the stone which has come to hand recently is as rich as any ever taken out of tho mine, and the lode itself is a fine strong compact reef. Queen of BEAcn.-Thia fortnight's crushing _ for tho Queen of Beauty has been carried on with great regularity and without any important stoppage, and as tho show made on tho plates has throughout been good, there will certainly be a handsome return from tho cleaning up and retorting which takes place to-day. It will probably amount to 700ozs of gold, a yield which will pay the shareholders a handsome dividend.

Caledonian.—Operations are still progressing in the neighbourhood of the engine-sbaftj and in other portions of the old workings, from which the recent crushings were obtained, and there is some quartz' coming to band, which appears to be of good payable quality. But there is no change of importance in these portions of the mine, nor can any be expected. On Monday next the manager will start driving on the Cure No. 5 reef from the level, at which it has been followed to the boundary by the latter company, and no time will be lost in opening up a section of it for staping. In the meantime a rise is being put up from the No 2 level to meet that which is to follow the course of the lode into the Caledonian mine. This was started on a leader which lay very fiat, and which was not at the time supposed to be the reef in question, but now after the rise has got up 6 or 8 feet, the angle of underlie has became more verticle, and the manager is now of opinion that the lode is identical with the No. sof the Cure. It is only a theory at present, but it is likely to prove correct.. We may add that the lode is not being carried up in the rise. The air, in here is deficient, and the object is to get communication opened so as to secure ventilation, and then the reef can be broken down and opened more conveniently.
