MINING MATTERS.
Cube,—There was a bettor show of gold yesterday in the Cure mine than, there has been for some time past, and 301bs of rich specimens, and about 4-Olbs of good picked stuff, came to,hand from the stopes of the No. 5 reef, immediately abovo the drive which has been started on the new foot-wall lode towards the Bed Queen boundary. In other portions of the stopes gold, shows freely, and although there have'not been so many specimens to hand during the last'week, there is no depreciation in the quality of the general stuff. Wo may add that the drive on the No. 1 reef has now reached the Caledonian boundary, or as close to it, at all events, as the manager will proceed until such lime as the line is accurately defined by survey, but this will probably be done as soon as possible, as tho Caledonian Company will be anxious to start operations from the face as soon as they conveniently can do so. Point Ecssbu Tbibute.—Britt and party have had another parcel of sis tons crushed, but the result is a very poor one, only amounting to loz 3dwts gold. Manukau.—After this week, in consequence of the comparative exhaustion of the old level, and the undeveloped state of tho reefs at tho new one, tho crushing power employed by this company at tho Tramway battery will bo reduced from twelve to six head.. In the meantime a contract has been let for driving on the course of the No. s"(Cure) reef a distance of 100 feet, and before that distance is accomplished tho manager expects to get under tho shots of gold worked in tho upper level, and in the strike of tho rich branch veins which dip from the foot-wall of the No. 3 roef towards this lode. At present tho reef has a promising appearance, but no gold has yet been visible. Caledonian.—lt will be seen elsewhere that the Caledonian Company call for tenders for driving on the course of the Cure reef, returnable on tho 20th instant. In all likelihood, a fair start with the driving will not bo made until Monday next, but after that we may expect operations to progress steadily. There is a fine reef to hand at tho boundary, and good payable crushing stuff. Eich specimens came to hand from within a few feet of it, and there is every reason to believe that the long shot of gold which has been traced through the Cure ground will continue through tho Caledonian, and that this No. 5 reef, will prove as important an acquisition to tho latter company as it did to the Cure,
.Kujjanui Batiebt.—This company's mill was started to work on .Monday night, after repairs wero effected, which included tho replacement of two wornout stampor-boxes by noiv ones. There aro 30 head of stampers now working for the City of London Company, and 10 head for tho tributers of the old Shotover mine.
