MINING MATTERS.

Tookey Company.—A rumour gained currency amongst a few last night to the effect that a rich and important discovery had been made in the Tookoy mine. Knowing that tho company were not at present carrying on operations, but that ihero were tribute parties working in the claim, wo felt convinced that there was little foundation for such a rumour, but in order to make certain wo made inquiries of the manager. Mr Dewar informs us that ho has no knowledgo of any such discovery as that alleged, consoquenlly tho rumour is incorrect, 1 It may bo, however, that it is not altogether without foundation. Thero are t*o tribute parlies working, one from tho 200feet level upwards, the others havo a section beneath that level. There has always been a little gold around these sections near and at the junction of the hanging-wall leader with the main reef, and it is just possible that tho tributers havo met with some golden stringer. It is evident, however, that there is nothing of any great consequence, certainly nothing to creato any excitement,' for the manager would havo been aware I of any important discovery at. the time our reporter waited on him to ascertain

particulars, Tho probnbilily is that llio rumour is n mcro canard, set afloat, perhaps, by somo iuteresTcTpartics, with • a viow to creating a rise in tho markot. . Obown Princess,—A nico parcel of 85lbs of picked stuff and speoimens carno to hand yesterday from tho slopes on tho No. 2 reef, and thero was also n good show of gold in tho speciraon leader. This No. 2 reef is certainty improving ill appoarance. It now looks very promising, and shows gold moro freely than, usual, and from tho great cxtout to wliioh it has • been oponed, it is certain to turn out a largo . supply of good crushiug stuff. Thero is now & largo quantity of quarto in tho hoppers, and orushiug will shortly bo resumed. 1

DAUNTLE9S AND SIXK • TO • HIBB.-A crushing for Lang and party, tributers of tho above company'r mine, was completed yesterday, at tho Moauatainri battery, for a yield of 2ozs.llwts molted geld. Thero wero lOi tons of stuff put through tho mill for this return. Tho parly roferrod to aro working in what is known as tho old Coronet ground. Thoy saw no gold in tho stuff seat to tho mill, but thought it_ sufficiently good-looking to warrant n trial, and although tho result has bccu bolow tho payablo point, wo bolievo thoy . iutond to pcrsevcro iu Ihcir explorations, in ltopea of meoting something hotter. Bed WmxE and Blub 'J'ribotk- — Another crushing for Campbell and party's amalgamated tribute of tho lied White and Bluo mino was commonocd yesterday; at tho Moanataiari battery, with tho 6-hcad vacated by Iho Daunt* less tribulors. Thero is a considerable > quantity ready for treatment, and as it has been easily obtaiucd, and taken out' at a minimum cost, an arcrago as good as that obtained from tho last crushing, although rather uudor an average of an ounco will pay handsomely, and leave a profit. Black Angel.-It is probab'.o that tho crushing for tho Black / ligel tributers, Wingato and party, .which is now being treated with fivo head of stampers at tho • Moanataiari battery, will bo completed to*day.' From tho appearanoo > of tho stuff and tho show on llio plates it should, yield a good payablo roturn. Cure.—Another parcel of 40lbs of specimens was obtained ycslorday from tho Cure mino, and gold still shows as freely as usual, but so far as tho No; 5 reef is ooncerned there is no chango of importanco to note, and that is porhaps tho best news which could bo had from n lode" which has been turning out kuoh largo quantities of rich stono recently. 'J ho No. <1 reef, which tho manager is now opening up at tho main lovol beyond tho slide, has greatly improved in appcaranco and consistency. It is now a well-defined lode, from 8 to 9 inches thick, and is heavily charged with promising minerals. It showed gold yesterday foe tho first' time since work on it was resumed, and tho manager is pretty that tho reef will prove of cons : derablo importance in this largo "section of the mine, which extends from tho slido to tho Bed Queen boundary. West Coast Tbibute,—l mongst other parties operating in miues i oil llio Waiotahi Creek who liavo beeu inconvenienced by tho want of a road by which to . transmit their quartz to tho flat aro Langford and party, tho tributers of tho West Coast mino. Thoy havo about 150 tons of quartz ready lor tho mill, and taking tho earliest opportunity when tho Waiotahi Creek road extended to their boundury they have started Carting quarlz to tho flat. JThcro aro numerous other tribute parties who have boon in tho same dilemma. Somo havo oven had to suspend operations, but tho creokroad now extends as far us tho Shamrock battery, and is being still further extonded as far as tho hopper of Iho Now Calodonia mine, so that they will now be iu a position to carry on .their works without tho vexatious delays caused by impassablo roads or tho heavy cxpenso of transit over a road which, at tho best, was scarcely practicable. s
