The Tairua Goldfield.

(FROil OUB OWtf BEPORTE!!.)

Wednesday. The weather nince Monday has been very fine, but on that day it !was something frightful, the rain literally coming down in torrents. Several started off for town, and when they arrived at Puriri were in a most miserable plight, thoroughly drenched to the skin. The river was exceedingly high, and very dangerous to cross, so that those who ventured over did so with great risk of their lives. The water was very rapid, and it was as much as they could do to :land safely. The crossing of the river opposite Say's Hotel is most uupleasant, and especially at this season of the year is dangerou?, and it behoves the Government to look to thi3 at once, as on Monday several narrow escapes from being swept away took place, which but for the promptitude of Mr Say, accidents would doubtless have occurred. Mr Saj, however, went in on horseback, and brought those in danger over safely. A bridge for foot passengers can be carried over at a very fmall outlay, the carpenters who aro now engaged at Say's hotel offer to construct it for £10, one half of which Mr &iy will contribute. The permission of the natirc3 would have to be obtained for the formation on the Grahamatown side, but the opposite is the property of Mr Say. Tho above is a most' liberal offer, and the authorities could not do better than accept it. The Government aro very impecunious just now, but in order to avoid delay we can arrange to have an amateur concert at Mr Hall's restaurant, tho proceods to bo handed over to'the engineer on tho completion of the bridge to the satisfaction of a committee.

There is quite an esoclus from Measlestown, the fine weather being taken advantage of to remove to the upper camp. In mining news there .is very little indeed to report, the only thing of importance being the discovery of a good strong lode, showing nice gold. The whereabouts of this I am not at liberty to inasmuch as the ground is in dispute, and it was only ou this condition that I saw the stone, and the position of the reef. There is some talk of the Buona Ventura mine, situated.about one 'mile south of the prospectors', and near to the Crown claim, held by the Logans. It is a bold cliff or precipice, fully 200 feet high, and iu the very face of this there are numerous leaders, varying in size from 10 inches to several feet wide. Very fair prospects have been obtained therefrom, and in a few days work will be commenced, when I shall pay it a visit.

I heard tho other day that a gentleman on the Thames, who is conversant with Mexican and South Californian mining, stated in publio that he could or build an arastra on the ground which would be admirably adapted for some of the cement leads that exist here. As this means of testing the leads is within the reach of every miner, it would prove a benedt to this community and many others if tho said gentleman would give us an idea of what it is like, and how to proceed in the construction of odo.
