The Tairua Goldfield.

Yesterday Messrs Kennan and those interested in the license area No. 1, northeast from the Prospectors' claim, Tairua, applied to the Warden for police protection while tho survey of the claim was being completed. It appears that the lease line and one side line have been cut, and the Warden agreed under the circumstances to accept the plan made from the lines, but on the question of protection he referred the applicants to Inspector Bullen, and to him they accordingly applied. Mr. Bullen, however, had no available police to despatch to that place, and he telegraphed to the Government for instructions. Of course the Warden having accepted the plan drawn from the two surveyed lines, with the application for the license, the applicants will be in no worse position than if the whole survey was completed and a proper plan lodged within the limit of ten days from the time of marking out.

From the field itself thjre was no definite news yesterday, but there was a rumour in Puriri that 60z3 gold had been obtained from some claim near the prospectors' area. Two men who had gone up from Puriri on the previous night, returned hurriedly yesterday for their swags, and went back into the hills again It was these men who gave the information about this gold having been found. There is an air of truth about it too, and it quite corresponds with statements made by John Neeyes, the prospector of the district, who himself obtained upwards of 20ozs of gold by washing from the few openings which have been made, and who, from the mullock which surrounded the 451bs of stone crushed as a trial recently, obtained 2ozs of gold. All reports_ agree that the prospects of tho new district aro rich and promising.
