I begged of her to Btop at home, aud slm said " You know what I told you, and I mean it." I got excited. I said, " I will get you and your children settled in the house, and I will stop you from going a fourth time if I can." I came to town on the Saturday, tho 3rd, and bought a pistol for 10s, with some powder and shot. I planted the j.ialol until morning, and I went up to seek Jack Toovey. Iwent upabout six miles'. I fired the pistol to see how high the shot would go. I wanted to shoot him in the legs. I loaded the pistol l again, and went to look for Toovey. I found him up the creek. I saw him in the whare. 1 told him I was going to shoot him. I said I would only shoot hia legs. Ho stood outside. I let the pistol of twice, hut it would not go. He held a tomahawk over his head to chuck at me. fie said, "If you don't put that down, I will chuck this at you." I said, " What aro you, to take a wife away'from five little children?" He said, "I don't know what you are talking about." I said, " You are a villain; you know all about it," I fired the pistol at his legs, and said to Leather, " Here is the pistol; 1 don't want it any longer." I Went down the creek, and Leather followed me. There was another man there, and I said I was sorry for what I had done. They advised me to go away, and they would make peace with Toovey. I said I would give myself up at whatever cost. I went-home.' Next morning my wife said, " You have got a pistol." I said, " How do you know ?" She said, " I see the bill in your pocket." I asked what she had; done with itf and she said she had put it in the fire/ I said if nobody came for mo, I thought Iwould go to Auckland or somewhere else for a job. I said I had : shot Toovey in the • leg, and that we could have saved all that. The policeman came up at 6 o'clock. He asked ,how far was the head of the Kauwaeranga. I said, about 12 miles up. He asked if Edwards lived there, and I said that I was Edwards. _ Pr.jsoner was then committed to take his trial at the, next criminal sessions.
