I said, " You are a villain; you know all about it," I fired the pistol at his legs, and said to Leather, " Here is the pistol; 1 don't want it any longer." I Went down the creek, and Leather followed me. There was another man there, and I said I was sorry for what I had done. They advised me to go away, and they would make peace with Toovey. I said I would give myself up at whatever cost. I went-home.' Next morning my wife said, " You have got a pistol." I said, " How do you know ?" She said, " I see the bill in your pocket." I asked what she had; done with itf and she said she had put it in the fire/ I said if nobody came for mo, I thought Iwould go to Auckland or somewhere else for a job.
