Negotiations between Mr. Connolly (Agent-General for AA T estem Australia) and the Belgian Government for the sale of the balance of AVest Australian frozen meat have been abandoned under direction of the West Australian Government, owing to the difficulty of get-, ting refrigerated steamers, and also because it is not desired to disturb the contract with the Imperial Government. The Boston Commercial Bulletin states that the demand for wool continues moderate, with prices but little changed. Choice Avstralian -wools, bought largely hy America, are firmer since the opening of the Melbourne sales, although average to inferior wools show a declining tendency, and withdrawals hare been lioavy. The woollen goods market is rather chaotic still, hut the willingness of workers in the mills to accept cuts in wages of 15 to 20 per cent, in order to Ireep the mills running is one of the , most hopeful signs of the moment.— Aus.-N.Z. The High Commissioner cables, under date London, October 21:—The official price of gold to-day is £5 19s 3d; shipments to America. CANTERBURY MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. Business in the produce market is still very quiet and quotations generally remain similar to those of last week. A few sales of next season’s oats have been effected at up to 3s 9d, and in some instances higher. Chaff quotations continue steady, hut it is reported that lower rates have been paid at country stations. Potatoes are still coming forward, there being a fair demand from the North Island. HIDES AND TALLOAV. The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow in AA'ellington were held on Friday by the various brokers. Competition was dull throughout, and prices for all sound ox and cow hides and yearlings were 3d to 4d lower, whilst cut and slippy descriptions were reduced as much as 6d per lb. All descriptions of calfskins were lower by Ifd to 2)d. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from their London office, under date of October 20; —“Tallow: 1565 casks offered, 462 casks sold, mostly 3s to 4s per cwt. lower. Fine mutton neglected, nominally £3 16s, good mixed £3 9s to £3 10s.”
