NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth Lawn Tennis Club was held on Saturday evening, when there was a good attendance. The chair -was occupied by the president, Dr. Leatham. ANNUAL MEETING. ' The annual report expressed the thanks of the committee to those ladies who provided afternoon tea during the season. Miss D. Simpson acted as honarary secretary to the Ladies’ Tennis Committee, and Mrs. Haseler to the Croquet Committee. The club’s overdraft stood at £'44l 19s 3d, ns against £79 3s lid last year. The increase was largely accounted for by improvements to the club grounds carried out during the winter months, the laying down of two new lawns, the renewal of the pavilion and the erection of a dividing fence being the main items. The membership was; Tennis, men, 26; ladies 45; croquet, 23; honorary 50.

' In referring to the report, the president said that there had been a large amount of work done on the club’s property, the courts being increased to six, and it was hoped to have a championship meeting held at New Plymouth, as had been done years ago. The courts were a fine asset to the chib and to the town, and the prospects ahead were splendid providing they could finance their undertakings satisfactorily. - The expenditure had been heavy. In addition to the overdraft of £441, outstanding accounts totalled ,£196; this included the cost of the removal of the pavilion. The need- existed for improving the club’s finances, therefore it was proposed to increase the annual subscription fees. The cost of labour had increased considerably, and rates also showed aip advance of £l4 over the previous year. Every effort should be made in the direction of securing new members, and a good many should bo available from the newrcomers to the town. , Last year’s vforking showed a deficit of £6O. The sum of £283 had been paid out in improvements, and there was a balance still to be met. The report and balance-sheet "were then adopted, ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

The election of officers resulted; President, Dr. Leatham (re-elected) j vicepresident, Mr. J. O. Nicholson (reelected) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. 0. B. Webster; auditor, Mr. H. W, Kirkby (re-elected) ; committee Messrs. H. Rookol, A. R. Ryder, N. Balhnrry, B. B. Davies, and Dr. Home; ladies’ committee, Mesdames Rockel, Morrison, Nicholson, and Penn; Misses Brewster. Thompson, Rollo, Kerr, and Simpson (secretary). ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS. It was decided to increase the fees as follows: Entrance fee, for men, 10s; ladies, 6s; annual subscription, men, £4; ladies £3, reducible by 10s in each case (f paid on or before December 31, or within one month after election; non-playing members, no entrance fee, annual subscription £1 (reducible by ss); playing members elected after February 1 in each year to pay entrance tee and half subscription. -* Speaking to the resolution, Mr. Nicholson said that from a business point of view it was absolutely necessary to increase the subscriptions. In fact, the committee would have been justified in taking the step previously, as during the past five years the cost of maintenance and material had gone up considerably. When various matters were taken into consideration it would be seen that members were getting good value for their money, even under the new rates. There had been no increase in the subscription since 1917, with one slight exception. GENERAL. If weather conditions prove favourable, the opening day will probably be Saturday next.. The club has already applied to the New Zealand Dawn Tennis Association to allot the annual championship fixture for the New Plymouth courts. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the ladies for the efficient manner in which they had carried out their duties. The outgoing committee, the president, the secretary, and the press were also accorded a vote of thanks. The incoming committee were recommended to institute a “ladder” competition.
