THE VANITY OF CLOTHES.

A DOCTOR’S ADVICE. LONDON, Oct. 16. Dr. Leonard Hill, Director of tho Department of Applied Physiology, in a treatise ou the science of ventilation published by tho Medical Research Committee, says that clothes were intended to protect their wearers from climatic changes, but are now fashioned largely to satisfy tho vanity of the idle and to maintain a false .system of sexual selection. “It is possible,” he says, “to combine beauty with perfect hygienic qualities, and the great error in clothes is lack of ventilation. Clothes should he as light as possible, and permeable to air, Cellular material being best. When tho temperature is 59 degrees above zero we should wear, summer clothing; ■ whon it is 50 degrees, summer clothing and a light overcoat; 32 degrees, winter clothing, thick underwear, and an overcoat; ii degrees below freezing point, a fur overcoat should be worn as well. Wo should aim at coolness without chilliness.” Woman’s neckwear, adds Dr. Hill, is more hygienic than man’s.
