THE MYSTERIOUS WRECK.

POSITIVE IT WAS STEAMER. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, August 23 (1.45 p.m.) Messrs. S. M'Crao and E. Williams, the two men who reported the supposed wreck, telephoned this afternoon expressing the positive opinion that the object sighted was not a mirage but a vessel in distress. It was also seen by Mr. Graham, manager of Rototahi Station, and his son through binoculars. The vessel appeared to be about five miles out and the Arahura on her way to Auckland passed between the derelict and the snore. The weather then was misty and the wreck could not bo discerned from the shore, but the bane afterwards lifted and the vessel could bo seen quite distinctly, lying very low in the water. , M'Crao watched it for two hours amt Graha a and his son till dusk. M'Crao said ho was convinced it was a steamer and not a sailer and was a large, vesael of the mutton boat type.
