Included in the Sugar Company’s proposals was the stipulation that 48 hours should bo worked by the men, while the Union insisted" on a working week of 44 hours. The rate of wages was also contested. No settlement was reached, but it is understood that there are excellent prospects of a settlement when the Council resumes on Tuesday next. A SHOOTING CHAMPIONSHIP. MASTERTON, July 11.. The claybird pigeon championship of New Zealand was fired here to-day, and was won by Duncan Fraser, of Masterton. S. Glennie (Gisborne), and E. R. King (Huntly) tied for second place. A TRAIN MISHAP. CHRISTCHURCH, July 21. The South express did not reach Christchurch until 9.40 to-night, two and a half hours late. It up at Ohertsey by an accident which happened to the "afternoon train to Ashburton, the engine of that train being derailed at a loop line. A railway gang replaced the engine on the rails, and the express was then able to pass and resume the journey to Cliristchurch. The ferry steamer Maori was held hack for passengers and mails, and sailed for Wellington at 10.35 p.m.
