PROMOTING INDUSTRIAL PEACE

Per Press Association. At ELLINGTON, Juno 10. Tho special meeting of the New Zoolend Employers’ ' Federation convened for the purpose of considering the best means to adopt for promoting industrial peace was continued in camera to-day. After discussion a sub-committee was set up to crystallise the opinions of the delegates, and its report as adopted is expressed in tho following resolutions;— That this meeting, after a full discussion of tho industrial position in New Zealand toMay recommends the following conclusions for’ considerati n by employers’ and workers’ organisations. and the public .generally, in the hope that they may eventually form the basis of a friendly discussion snd pos_ sibly negotiations for Hie promotion of industrial peace;— ;1) That in view of tho announced aims und intentions of prominent sections of official Labour, it is tho opinion of this meeting that a national conference between re-pre- , sentntives of capital and organised labour would be futile. (2) In order to prepare the way for the establishment of more friendly relations and bettor mutual understanding, employers are leconimendq.l to got into closer touch with their uWn employees hv the establi-lirnont of workshop committees, mootings with employees, personal inquiry into grievances, consideration of suggestions, and by such other means as may be deemed desirable. (3) That omnloyers be recommend cd to encourage education propaganda in their own establishments in ' connection with matters affecting the common interests of both employcis and workers, with a view to combating the prevalence of unsound economic theories. Such moans are suggested as workshop.committees, staff meetings, circulation of informative ' literature, short- talks, discussion,;, etc. (4) That earnest consideration should be given to the adoption of a svstem of payment hy results, either by means of piecework, premium, or bonus systems, or profit-sharing, am, superannuation funds as may be best applicable to each particular business. (6) That tho Government should ho recommended to provide by means of national taxation adequate provision for unemployment and invalidity insurance. ;6 Encouragement and assistance , to be given by the Government to workers to built and purebtso their own homes.
