MIMI’URENUI NOTES.

FROM OtTR OWN CORRESPONDENT. June 10.—rOn Friday evening last a pleasant little gathering took place at Ngatiawa Boarding House, Urenui, when some forty guests, at the invitation of Mrs. Sowry, assembled to commemorate Mr. Beryl Sowry’s twentyfirst birthday. Music, singing, etc., were indulged in, and during the evening a most welcome supper was handed round. The deer which was reported to have been seen in tliis district recently has apparently extended his pilgrimage to Stratford, as it is said he has been seefa in that locality. According to latest reports M l ** Northcott, who met with a serious accident through his horse falling with him whilst crossing a bridge at Okoke on Thursday last, is progressing as well as can bo expected at the New Plymouth Hospital. . ■ I understand the Urenui Rifle Club s annual ball is to take place shortly, and as is usual with this event is sure to bo highly successful. It is stated that the returned soldiers’ hall is to take place next month, and no doubt it will bo eagerly looked forward to. Old Rewi Poto, who since his return from 'Australia has been turned out at Mr. Gordon Salway’s farm at the Mimi, has been taken in hand again, by B. Johnson, and should the black son of Maniapoto—The Boyne stand training he will no doubt be heard of again oh the racine track.

The adjourned -annual meeting of householders in the Mimi district was held in the school room on Monday evening last. The balance-sheet (which showed a credit balance of £2l) was adopted. The new committee was elected as /follows;—Messrs. Wm. Taylor, J. Cannon, P. Spurr, J. F. Phillips and Geo. Baker. At a meeting held immediately afterwards Mr. Taylor was appointed chairman and Mr. P. Spurr secretary. Matters in connection with the improvement of the school grounds were discussed, and it waseventually agreed that the requisite' material for concrete paths and fencing an enclosure round the school should be procured, whilst labour should bo employed to carry out the work and to re-arrange the garden plots, etc. The probable attendance of the school was discussed and it was estimated that there would shortly be,some fifty children coming to.the school, when, it was pointed out, they would be entitled to a second teacher. The chairman reported that Messrs. Moore (the architect) and P. White, on behalf of the Education Board, had visited the school and that the necessary steps would bo taken to procure a grant for the enlargement of the present building. After the transaction of .other business of a routine nature the committee adjourned.
