THE PRICE OF BUTTER.
GOVERNMENT ACTION. CAUSING LOSS TO FARMERS. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, June 11. Replying to the official statement that the Government has done no more than follow'' the, custom of recent years Mr. Goodfellow, manager of the New Zealand Daily Association, states that producers took no exception to holding back a quantity of butter 'sufficient to supply local requirements until the coming season’s make was available. At the present time there were 220,000 boxes of butter in New Zealand, compared with, 100,000 at this time last year. Tin’s estimated surplus had in reality been sold to the Imperial Government, but Die New Zealand Government intended to appropriate the extra quantity for the purpose of supplying the local market in competition with the new season’s make, which would be available in increasing quantities after August 1 next. The Government would by this questionable means continue tp keep down the iprico of butter to a figure very much below the cost of production. Mr. Goodfellow quoted the prices ruling in other countries showing that inferior butter sold to-day in Australia at 2s 8d per lb., Canada and the United States 3s to 3s 6d, in England ac 3s to 5s per lb.
