WAITARA.

FROM OUR OWS CORRESPONDENT. June 10.—The annual meeting of tho committee of the Waitomo Licensing District was held yesterday. Present: Tho stipendiary magistrate, Messrs. Pigott, Jenkins, Gribhon, and Marlow. The police report was satisfactory and no recommendations were made. Tho transfer of tho license of the Waitara Hotel from D. Leslie to S. Ridgley was granted, and the usual applications for licenses of the Club, Masonic, Waitara, and Urenui hotels were granted. 1 A wholesale license was applied for by Messrs. Hatrick and Co., and was granted. Constable La Pouple called the attention of the committee to the fact that the license was not being used as the firm had no office in tho district’now. „ ' At tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday the magistrate dismissed a charge against T. Ewens of allowing a cow to wander on tho streets. Tho plea of “not guilty” was practically not taken into account, the magistrate’s decision being based on tho fact that the ranger had not pounded tho animal, hut had asked the defendant to pay tho fee of Is 6d. He refused to cfo so, and the ranger had paid the amount in himself and brought tho case into court. Tho magistrate held that the ranger was not within his rights in asking for a pounding fee unless tho animal was actually taken to tho pound, and dismissed, the case. To-morrow tho new marble bar is to bo on show, and on Saturday business will he opened. In the evening tho Waitara brass band will give a concert outside the building. Juno 11.—'There was a large company at Mr. W. Clare’s clearing sale yesterday afternoon. Tho Waitara, district will miss Mr. Clare, who lias always been a leading spirit in any movement of tho district, and his neighbours evidently recognise this as I understand that ho and his family are to ho entertained at a social next week. Mr. Clare has bought a farm at Thames. Tho Bov. Mr. Bodwill gave an interesting and instructive lecture on Uganda in St. John’s Hall last night. Owing to the inclement weather there
