THE GUILD SYSTEM.

INTERESTING EXPERIMENT. IN THE BUILDING TRADE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. LONDON, June 5. The attempt to cope with the serious housing problem has resulted in an interesting experiment in London and Manchester in applications of the guild system to Socialism, which, it is heliev I ed, is destined to Revolutionise industrial control. Under the system a trade union ticket is a certificate of membership of a guild, which is designed to mobilise the necessary labour and eventually to mi dertake all branches of building, supplying skilled architects and engineers and carrying on all necessary and de- ; sirnhlo public and private work. The labour of a guildman will no longer be a marketable commodity, but a guildmau will bo "on the strengtlr’ for life. It is anticipated a guild will be able to increase the purchasing pew t of its members’ pay by tha scientific organisation of production. Discussion have been proceeding with the Ministry of Health with reference to the percentage of tost allowable for management, and this has now been settled on a basis .of 6 per cent., in additkn to the remuneration of £4O per house payable by a local authority.— Reuter Service. GUILDS NOT POPULAR. WITH AUSTRALIAN LABOUR. (Received*June 8, 4.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 8. In reference to the cablegram about guild socialism in England the bulk of opinion, both employers and employees, appears to bo that it is unlikely at present to obtain a footing in Australia. The main stumbling block is the labour - unions’ strong opposition to everything in the shape of a division of profits system.
