WAITARA.

•ROM our OWN CORRESPONDENT. Doc. 6.—lt is with great regret that I record the sudden death on Friday evening of Mr. James B. Barleyman. Ho had been suffering from heart trouble for some years and a few weeks back had a serious attack, but had so far recovered that he was about again, and on the previous day was driving in his gig. On Friday, however, a sudden attack carried him off, and he was buried yesterday afternoon in the AVaitara Cemetery. The deceased was a farmer until the state of his health compelled him to give up the land, and he has since devoted a good deal of time to the photographic art, at which he was most successful, and at almost every junction within miles of Waitara his familiar figure might bo seen, and his

ro ion heard calling a pause while he j focussed his camera; and the prints of . many of his pictures have been repro- i ducod in the illustrated papers of both the North and South. Islands. A meeting of tho Emergency Committee of the North Taranaki Patriotic League was held on Saturday afternoon, at which several recommendations wore made for money grants to wounded soldiers. A combined meeting of citizens and tho local branch of the Returned-Sol-diers Association is being held on Wednesday night to consider the formation of a club to be used not exclusively for returned soldiers, but by other citizens also. There is a good deal to be said in favour of the scheme. It is doubtful whether a club exclusively for soldiers would bo a success; hut for a club at which all and sundry could foregather, the chances of success are more than elemental.
