CENTRAL SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COBIMITTBE. A meeting of the committee of the Central School was held on Monday evening. Those present were Messrs. G. H. Dolby (in the chair), W. Girling, T. Haragrave, F. Heed, C. Lindop, W. S. Cobham, F. A. Coleman (secretary), and H. A. Stratford (headmaster). An apology for absence was received from Blr. S. G, Smith, BI.P. Tho headmaster reported that the average daily attendance for the past two weeks bad been 621.2 or 94.1 per cent, of an average roli of 666. The present roll number was 667. With the exception of Standard VI. tho attendance was very satisfactory. As Standard VI. had now finished their final examination, the attendance had not been so keen, but nevertheless much good work was being done, especially in French and Algebra. At the recent proficiency examination 48 pupils gained their proficiency certificates, and eight their competency certificates. In the competitive essays arranged by the S.P.C.A. ten prizes were won by pupils from this school. The gate in the back fence had now been erected, as had the door in the tool shed. The grass in the large playground was spoiling for the want of attention. It was decided to try to obtain sheep to eat off the grass on the flat. In response to an invitation from, tho committee of the West End School it was decided to give the Central School children a holiday on Thursday afternoon to attend tho gala at Kawaroa Park.

The prize-giving is to take place in the Good Templar Hall on Friday, the 19th, provided that the schools do not close earlier owing to the elections. The chair will be taken by Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P.

The committee unanimously passed a motion expressing its hearty ■ appreciation of the excellent work done by Mr. S. G'. Smith, M. P., in the interests of education both on the Education Board and in Parliament.
