WOMEN GROW TIRED. LETTER TO COUNTY COUNCIL

An ultimatum from the women resident on the Piko Road came before the Clifton County Council on I'riday m the form of a letter bearing eight signatures, which, ran: . •‘■\Ve, the undersigned women or Piko Road (Okokc), do appeal to you to have the road metalled <us there has been £ISOO granted for this* work of which u.u-t has been granted from the Government since 1912. Wo think ns mothers of sons ikho fought for justice and freedom that we should have a little justice shown to us, and not have to bog another winter through mud girth deep. We really think it a shame that we should be called upon to do so. ’ ' Continuing to refer to the failur# of the council to carry out the work, the petition said: "Of course the plea has nl-. wavs been ‘no labour,’ but there has never been a tender called to see it there was ’•.hour to bo had. Mould vou kindly tell us if wc have a councilfor for our road? There lias never been anyone for a long time to sec, it a e need metal or not. If tho Clifton County will not do anything m the matter we will.,appeal to tlie Government'to help us out of the mud. \\c think all tho Clifton County wants is our big rates,_ which we are called on to pay while we hog through the mud ®*Xhe chairman (Councillor R. H. Pigott), who is tho representative of tho riding concerned, said he had been up the road twice in the last three months. Regarding the condition of the road, it was not duo to any fault of the council. which was pushing on with the matter as speedily as the Government Department would allow. Tire council was now waiting for the Advances Department to advance the loan. Though the required signatures of settlers had been obtained there had boen delay in netting them and, despite the fact that the council knew the subsidy had been granted, it had not been able to go on with tho work without being certain that the loan would bo granted. Councillor Kennington moved that the matter of the letter he left to the riding member, who should interview the ladies and explain the position. Councillors laughed and tho chairman said he had interviewed them the previous day. , Eventually tho county clerk was directed to convey an explanation of tho position.
