A DOUBTFUL REPORT.
IO THE ETITOE.
Sir, —It has appeared in your columns on more than one occasion lately that certain coal miners in Wales were receiving from £BOO to £I2OO per year. May I ask if you are in a position to vouch for the accuracy of the report? It probably refers to managers and engineers, as otherwise it could only be regarded as a glaring instance of profiteering, because no man is worth that arilount for his labour alone in a coal mine. I mentioned the matter to a strong Labour supporter the other day, and he expressed the opinion that the report was circulated hy interested capitalists for the purpose of making out to what extremes Labour is prepared to go to if it had its way; also to bring under the notice of the masses the real cause of their having to pay so much for their coal.—l am, etc., DOUBTFUL.
[No, we are not in a position to vouch for the accuracy of the report. In view of the fact, however, that miners in New Zealand can, if they wish, earn £2 a day and that watersiders in Wellington actually earn in some oases up to £l6 per week wo do not altogether disbelieve the cables.— Ed., T.H.]
