A PROGRESSIVE FIRM.

(Published by arrangement.) In these days of high prices and uncertainty it is refreshing to come into contact with a bouse that has really done something to reduce the cost of living—especially when the article is such an important one as clothes. The Modern Tailors, Limited, are probably the most up-to-date house for tailor-made garments in New Zealand. They obtained large supplies of higholass tweeds, worsteds and serges, well in advance of the rising market. They secured good supplies of the old quality linings and pocketings. They have so organised their workroom that practically all waste is eliminated, and lastly they have sold at prices much below the average tailor, who has not been able to buy ahead and who still works on the old system. _ If we continued to dig our fields with spades instead of using the plough—if we were still content to rely on wind and sails for our overseas traffic —if the runner was our only means of communication, instead of the cable, telephone, or wireless, then the continuance of the old-fashioned method of making clothes could be understood, but the old days and ways are past, and there is no good purpose in wasting human energy in, the worship of tradition. In the boot-making industry specialisation has given a more shapely, comfortable, and weather-resisting boot than ever before at less cost or manufacture. . , ', . , To build a house in the old-fashioned, way you needed to be a bushman, a carpenter, a blacksmith, plumber, and every other imaginable trade. Of course tbis made a more independent man, and maybe a better man, but not many men are now willing to live as in the old days or work on the old methods. Today each portion of the work'is done by specialists, who turn out a more even, stable, and trustworthy job because of their special knowledge of their particular trade. The last trade to get out of the rut is the tailoring trade. With one or two notable exceptions they are still working on the old London Log, the origin of which is buried in obscurity. In Taranaki, the Modem Taijors have got out of the rut. They have eliminated most of the waste caused by the oldfashioned methods. Every part of the job receives as much personal attention as before and yet the concentrating of the mind on a particular section of the work produces a more stable garment, a neater finish, and a better fit than the old way. To eater for the man who cannot cope with the abnormally high. cost of tailormade goods they have Just opened' a ready-to-wear department, They have largo stocks of ready-to-wear suits and raincoats, which are displayed in two specially-designed show-cases. The stock is the most varied in Taranaki —from the giant to the dwarf they can fit you; from a Scotch Tweed to an Irish Donegal ; from an English Indigo Serge to a Colonial Worsted. . , ' The finishing-off of-their ready-made suits exact to your measures is a special feature of their service. The cash system which they run is probably unique in the tailoring trade of New Zealand. You can safely, say “If its from the ‘Modem Tailors' it is paid for.” This cash system, which was the forerunner of their forward buying, accounts for the extraordinary value that they are able to give you. They are always as good as any other house, and always lower in price. ~ They will be pleased to show you all their stocks to explain the peculiar properties in the various grades and makes of cloths, the toughness and durability of the closely-spun worsteds, the warmth and comfort in the bannockburns the softness of the flannels, the pliability or the tweeds, and the clean close finish of the serges. In tailoring or ready-to-wear you cannot . do better than pay cash to The Modern Tailors, Limited, either at Stratford or New Plymouth.
