The Royal Dutch Packet Navigation Company’s steamer Van Cloon, en route from Java to South America, via Australian ports, left Sydney for Auckland at 7 p.m. on Monday. It was expected that the work of overhauling and reconditioning the Navua would be completed to-day, and that she would sail for Oamaru and

Timaru to load produce for Auckland. Tho vessel will take up her running in the Fiji-Tonga-Snmoa trade from Auckland on December 22. Tho overseas vessel Ayrshire loaded 5599 carcasses of iamb, 26,68-5 carcasses of mutton, mud 913 quarters of beef and 386 bags of froi-Kui sundries at Whakatane last week for England. It is stated that loading was carried on without a hitch; in fact, the depth at tho entrance to Whakatane River has now so far improved that there is not only plenty of wafer for lighters, but auxiliary scows can work tho port at low water. This is considered striking evidence of the success of tho harbour improvement works. Hie Whakatane Harbour Board is asking for a further £15,400 loan to continue the works.
