ROLL OF HONOUR UNVEILED. VUOII OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. The residents of Matau and surrounding districts assembled in the school on Wednesday afternoon, tho occasion being the unveiling of the roll of honour. Tho Hon. Major Hino, Minister of Internal Affairs, was present by special request to perform the ceremony. The chairman of tho school committee. Mr. Avers, presided, and called upon the Rev. U. Aker to give an introductory address. Mr. Aker referred to tho nation’s gratitude to God for his (Providential intervention in our sorrows, our anxieties, our joyous days, to our soldiers for their gallantry and sacrifice, to mothers, fathers and wives for their willingness to give their loved ones in the Empire's need. Wo had not only material but spiritual forces with us. ; The Rev. F. H. Partridge# referred 1 to tho fino spirit displayed by the soldiers, which was tho chief factor in bringing the war to a successful con- : elusion. Those who had .sacrificed their lives in tho Empire’s cause had died tho noblest death any one could die, and they richly deserved the heaven; of rest and peace. I Tho Hon. Major Hino congratulated tho ladies, on whom a largo amount of ' work had fallen, also the farmers, who , had evidenced a good spirit in coming out amidst so busy a time. Ho ex- 1 pressed his pleasure at being present on tho occasion,, and of paying a last- [ ing tribute to our soldiers, who j hod fought a good fight., He re-; quested continued assistance and pa-; tience for them. Some, although np- 1 parently well, wore nerve wrecked,; and would take some time to return . to their usual state of health. He I expressed regret that when tho deluge 1 of war came the Empire was unprepar- : ed for the conflict. Had they listened. to Lord Roberts and others there! would have been no war. Ho urged ' upon all to see that we, did not find ' ourselves in a like position again. Ho did not want to see the young boys go; through what our soldiers had. The Matau district had given a large per- 1 oontage of its young manhood, for ; which all felt proud. i Tho audience then rose and sang! “God Save the King.” The Major told a few of his experiences in Palestine I which were humorous and instructive. Refreshments were handed round, and a vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Ayers, seconded by Mr. Holby, to the ■ speakers. The Rev. Mr. Aker also I moved a vote of thanks to the ladies who provided refreshments. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded a function which was a credit to tho 1 district. The roll of honour was artistically decorated by Weston Brothers, of Stratford. The design consists of tho 1 Allies’ flags with crown and Red Cross.
